Reuben H. Donnelley created the first official Yellow Pages directory in 1886. About a hundred years later the Yellow Pages saw inklings of its demise. Google's official birth date is September 27, 1998. And since we're into a mild history lesson - the internet as "www" originated around 1992. What made the internet so powerful was availability of information. What made Google so powerful was the ability to find the information you needed. What made it all possible was the personal computer.
Search engines like Yahoo allowed you to find a web page by typing keywords into a search box. The idea was for the search engine to find a page that seemed to reflect those keywords. It didn't take long for businesses to grasp the value of top search engine placements. Early adopters could do it rather easily by stuffing keywords into the content of their pages. The web page with the most keywords won! Google changed the game by looking at how people hyper-linked keywords in one webpage to a new page to reference information on that page. They recognized that this link was a distinction of quality. Sites who received a lot of links would achieve better ranks. And of course, the search engine optimization community figured out how to generate hundreds, if not thousands, of links to a webpage, effectively pushing it to the top of the search engines.
In order to maintain quality in the search results, Google and other search engines became increasingly better at reading content. In Google's short history, the catch phrase of most reputable search engine optimization specialists has always been "Content is King". The idea was that if you had good content, you would attract links organically and your site popularity (and visibility) would grow as a result.
