It's hard to know how you're doing relative to your competition. You probably have a pretty good idea where you rank in Google generally speaking but how does your business compare against industry average? A recent local business study looked at 11,000 businesses. Personally I think you need to aspire to way better than average but at least this will give you a relative benchmark to determine how you're business is doing.

Most of this information is tracked with Google analytics (this information came out in a report by Bright Local). To compare yourself against these industy averages, you'll need Google analytics installed on your site.

  • Local businesses average 414 users and 506 sessions per month
  • Half of the traffic comes from organic search
  • Organic traffic has diminished for local businesses. I think Google's Local 3 Pack is picking up where organic traffic drops off (my conclusion... not mentioned in the report. See: Is Your Website Traffic Declining?)
